Ban on film ‘Maalik’ challenged in LHC

LAHORE: Lahore High Court has received a petition on Thursday challenging the ban imposed by the federal government on Pakistani action-thriller film ‘Maalik’.

It has been stated in the petition that the movie does not spread any kind of anarchy and the government has no right to ban the film, local media reported.

Maalik, written, directed and produced by Ashir Azeem, had been banned on Wednesday after the federal government suddenly revoked its censor certificate.

A notice issued by the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage said ‘In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 9 of the motion Pictures Ordinance, 1979, the federal Government is pleased to declare Urdu feature “Maalik” in respect of which a Censor Certificate No.54/M-I/2016 has earlier been granted, as uncertified film in the whole of Pakistan with immediate effect.’

The Sindh government had also on Tuesday banned the Urdu film but later took back its decision.

Besides Ashir, Ehteshamuddin, Farhan Ally Agha, Sajid Hassan, Tatmain ul Qalb, Hassan Niazi, Erum Azam, Adnan Shah, Pakiza Khan and Rashid Farooqui played lead roles in the film released on 8th April 2016 (nationally and internationally).
